A Destination Wedding at The Phoenicia Malta

Wedding Photography

Alice and Niall had a beautiful October wedding at the Phoenicia in Malta. October can be a little tricky in Malta since not all days are sunny that time of year. But this day was sunny and hot!

The bride and bridesmaids got ready at the Phoenicia while the groom and his groomsmen had their preparations just a 5 min walk away. We covered everything from preparations to the party in the evening. Even though we were only one photographer (and 1 Content Creator) it’s manageable within the timeline to cover both preparations with such a short walk. Their coverage was 10 hours – which was time enough for us to cover everything.

The ceremony was held at the beautiful Gazebo – this is so beautiful with the fortifications of Valletta on one side and an absolutely stunning view of the Grand Harbour on the other side. Right after the ceremony, we used the sea view as a backdrop for all the family photos and the champagne tower. After the family photos we spent around 45 minutes on couple photos around the hotel and at the Triton Fountain near the gates of Valletta. The reception, dinner, speeches, and dancing all took place at The Rotunda, surrounded by the beautiful gardens of The Phoenicia Malta. A live band kept the energy and spirits high throughout the night.

Content Creation

Alice and Niall chose a partial Content Creation coverage of their wedding day. @aureliacontent followed them both from preparations to reception and documented all the beautiful moments. They chose Content Creation because they wanted to be able to relive their entire wedding day the day after through all the video clips that were delivered.

“Their key quality? Doing it all whilst creating a fun and friendly environment - helping to soothe nerves and loosen us up which really allowed us to enjoy each moment.”

Family Photos and Cocktail Hour

One of the things that really stood out to me on this wedding day was the area behind the Gazebo, where guests gathered for cocktail hour after the ceremony. While still surrounded by the beautiful gardens, this spot opens up to sweeping views of the sea and the Grand Harbour. I found it particularly stunning as the sun began to set and the light grew warmer throughout the evening.

It provided an exceptional backdrop for family photographs, while also creating a relaxed and elegant atmosphere for guests to enjoy. On the opposite side, the historic fortifications of Valletta served as a constant reminder of how close we were to the city, adding yet another layer of character to an already remarkable setting.

The Ceremony

The Gazebo is undoubtedly a beautiful location for a ceremony. The pergola provides some welcome protection from the sun while still allowing couples to exchange their vows surrounded by the gardens.

Before the ceremony, I discussed the positioning of the first kiss with the officiant. By having the couple step just in front of the Gazebo, we ensured a clear, unobstructed view for both the guests and the photographer. A small adjustment that made a big difference to the final photographs.

The Phoenicia Malta

There’s a certain elegance and sophistication to a wedding at The Phoenicia Malta. It’s definitely one of my (Bobby) personal favourite venues in Malta. I think it’s so stylish and elegant. Everywhere you look you can see the rich culture and the history. I really enjoy being there and working there. There are so many options for photography in and around the hotel. For a summer wedding this is a perfect venue and they also have indoor venues for winter weddings. I could photograph a 100 weddings there and never get tired of it!
